Code of Conduct

/ visit WYS

What You See Festival was founded in 2018 to contribute to an inclusive and gender diverse society. With dance, theatre, music, literature, exhibitions, spoken word, parties, conversations and more, the festival offers a place to come together, question assumptions and enter into encounters.

The core values What You See upholds are: equity, positively activistic, open, questioning, connecting, transparent, respectful, accountable, unapologetic.
Gender and identity are topics that concern everyone. We therefore aim to create a space in which every individual feels that they belong and are valid, even if they experience discomfort or if they are challenged. As a festival, we hold space for this safety and freedom, but it can only come into existence with the support of audiences, artists, partners and team members. We ask everyone, including ourselves, to respect and apply the following codes of behavior:

Code of conduct

  • Everyone is validated to be at What You See Festival. Don’t put other people’s presence into question.
  • Be sharp on content and soft on human connections.
  • Respect and validate other people’s experiences, also (and especially) when they are different of your own.       .
  • What You See gives space to explore and learn. We acknowledge that thinking patterns can be persistent and deeply internalised. Audiences, artists and team members are accountable for (unintentionally) offensive language and actions. Taking in feedback and corrections and changing your language/behavior accordingly is part of the learning process.
  • Don't assume someone's gender, but respectfully ask about someone's pronouns.
  • We love boundaries! Respect these, of yourself and of others.
  • What You See celebrates joy, vulnerability, humanity, curiosity and connection. Be kind!

Some hard NO-GOs!
  • Harassment, racism, sexism, homophobia, xenophobia, transphobia, ableism, ageism, misogyny, islamaphobia, antisemitism, body shaming and any other form of discrimination/denial of someone's existence have no place at our festival (nor in society). We have a zero-tolerance policy here.
  • Verbal or physical violence and harassment will not be tolerated and will have serious consequences.
  • Alcohol is only served to visitors who are 18 years or older. Bar staff may ask for identification
  • According to Dutch law, smoking is not allowed in public buildings. Smoking is only allowed in designated areas.
  • Drugs are not allowed at What You See locations.
  • The use of professional photo, video or sound equipment during performances is strictly prohibited, unless you have received permission from the festival team and are in possession of the correct accreditation.
Please note: these NO-GOs are mandatory for all festival guests.
In case of infringement, the organistion of What You See reserves the right to deny further access.
